As per my knowledge ancestral property rule applies only to Hindu families. For example: a Christian individual can nominate anybody (even non-relative) for his property which he received from ancestors.

In this article you have mentioned that in case of shares in demat account the companies act will prevails over succession laws; however thats not correct position of law in view of a recent reported judgment of Bombay High Courts division bench headed by Justice A.S. Oak.
